Fresh from the Garden

Lettuce and raddish from the garden. Tomatoes are coming soon.
Like most summers in France, our daily vegetables and fruits come from the garden. The family used to have a bigger orchard.  When they moved to Les Sables d'Olonne, the space left for gardening is a tiny fraction of what they used to have. Thanks to a neighbor who lent his land for my father-in-law to freely use for his gardening, they're growing well and we'll have enough to last the whole summer. During the previous years, they even had a chicken coop where we got lots of eggs from. Sadly, they had to let this go when they moved to the new city.

Both my husband and I look up to my father-in-law as an inspiration when it comes to gardening. We hope to be able to create our own backyard garden once we are settled in the Philippines.

Growing well for daily harvests
Artichokes
Strawberries
Tomatoes
Petits Pois / Peas
Lettuce and Spinach, this is where we get them from, for our salad
Onions, carrots, haricot verts, potatoes and etc.

Of course, we still go to the supermarket like E.Leclerc or Intermarche' for meat and ingredients that are not available in the garden.  I managed to make Beef Bourguignon without the dutch oven using carrots from the garden. I wanted to surprise Mom and Dad who were arriving from Paris after a 3-day holiday. Click here for the recipe. It's great that small bottles of red wine, even small cartons of dry white wine. both perfect for cooking are available in supermarkets here.

Oh, I changed the recipe a bit, I didn't use beef broth here. Just added water and additional salt when needed as well as two stalks of chopped celery instead. I wanted all of the ingredients to be as natural as they could get. Well almost, except for the tomato paste.

Of course, coffee will always be welcome during lazy afternoons this weekend. In this case, I had a dose of caffeine while slow cooking the beef.

Oh, I'm wishing Moms around the world a Happy Mother's Day!

What do you have planned this weekend?
Love & light,
Arni

  1. I grew up on a farm and I can tell you there's no better taste than the taste of the veggies you grow yourself!

  2. It's nice that you have your own farm to get fresh vegetables from. I wish we can also do that here in the middle of the sandpit, but it's just not an option (besides, I don't think I have a green thumb. I bought 1 pot of basil last year and it only lasted a week. Lol)
