Coron Harvest: Cashew Factory
Cashews. Each region in the Philippines has their own special delicacy. Cashews are known to be the best"pasalubong, " or a homecoming gift if you're coming home from a vacation in Palawan. We bought cashews from Puerto Princesa previously, but the best cashews in Palawan, by far, are the ones from Coron. The best place to buy them from is right straight from the factory of L. Escarda's Coron Harvest.
We were surprised by how popular this place is. Photos of local celebrities and media people's pictures were plastered on the wall at a small yet colorful waiting area filled with stuffed toys. By the time, we arrived one evening, the cashews were all sold out.
We had to go back the next day to buy some. Rest assured, that the stock is new each day. It's habitual that cashews here are gone and shelves are wiped empty before closing time.
We found the owner and her workers busy packing the hot from the wok, freshly roasted cashews the following morning. Mrs. Lita Escarda started the business in the 70s. Now at the age of 76 years-old, she continues to manage and supervise her successful business, while teaching her grandsons how to run it.

These cashews are homegrown and rain-fed on the islands. The extraction of these from the fruit is not an easy task.
Cashew Flavors: They offer a free taste test to see which you like the most.
- Garlic (very crunchy),
- Sun Dried,
- Brittle (Sweet and cooked with honey),
- Bandi (Traditional way of cooking the cashews, sweetened and caramelized with a hint of coco flavor),
- Toasted
Price: Roughly, Php 700 per kilo (US $ 17 / Eur 13 per kilo) and you can have them re-packed according to the number of grams you need. There are readily packed ones in smaller grams from Php 200-350.
Where is it? How to get there?
It's in Barangay Tagumpay, Coron Town, Palawan, Philippines, right next to the famous Santino's restaurant. A tricycle ride from the town proper to the factory is approx. Php 18 per person one way (US 50 cents / Eur 0.40)

Tip: After shopping for cashews, head over to Santino's Restaurant for their wonderful food! Please reserve a table in advance, because it's always packed, especially on weekends.
**This is not a sponsored post. I just found these cashews rather addictive--please be warned that once you start eating them, it's difficult to stop even for those who are not fond of nuts.
Have a great weekend!
Love & light,
Arni

You're so right, cashew nuts are truly addictive! I don't usually lust nuts but cashew nuts are by far my favourites, I had no idea that they were so popular in the Philippines. I haven't seen any of those flavoured cashew nuts in Europe, though. We just have salted or non-salted.
ReplyDeleteI recently learnt to cook an indian curcuma rice with cashew nuts and peas and it's DELICIOUS!
Have a wonderful Sunday, Arni :)

how great! love how she still manages and is passing what she knows to her grandsons! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm a certified cashew nut addict so this would be my idea of heaven! I'd love to take a little bit of each flavour and then go and have a yummy lunch at Santino's!
ReplyDeleteI've been to Coron 6 times, and i'm heading back in 10 days for my 7th visit in 2 years.
ReplyDeleteNot once have i ever been to Coron and NOT gone to the cashew shop.
Really friendly service, and is probably the most well known shop in the town.
I've never been to Santino's though, so will give that a try on my upcoming visit.
I don't remember seeing this when I went to Coron. How could I miss this. But yeah, cashew is Coron's specialty, I did buy a few packs of it from the local market to take home as pasalubong. I'm not sure if Coron's Harvest cashews taste any different from the ones that we got, but I'd like to give them a try when I go back to Coron. Nice tip about Santino's Grill, I love that restaurant too.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post I did not know that you grow cashews in PH. Not very fun of them but I'd be interested in seeing the family run business (+ the restaurant after!)
ReplyDeleteMyself wife and I will be visiting Coron from 16 to 21 March and have heard about the tasty Cashews nuts of Mrs Tina. Please let us know if the factory shop is still open. Pse provide feedback to our email noordkykers@mylan.co.za Thank you Lehan and Tania
