B&B Kitchen Renovation

There's more to designing a kitchen apart from choosing paint colors, cabinets and tiles. Most specifically when it is a running hospitality kitchen for a bed and breakfast. With the help of my sister and brother-in-law who are both food and beverage specialists, we studied their menu and planned the kitchen accordingly.

Research & Concept Design
I observed and studied how the chef / owners and staff use and move within the space.  From there, I was able to plan the exact re-arrangement and placement of every appliance, cook ware in consideration of the proximity of the guests dining area when serving food.

As you can see in the Before photo below, everything was done inside the small space.  The staff bumped into each other as they worked in the kitchen.

Planning & Design Solutions
Kitchen
1. Provide 2 different undermount kitchen sinks on either side for sanitary and operational reasons. One for food washing in the food preparation corner and the other double bowl sink for dish washing.
2.  Provide a commercial kitchen standard stainless steel island at the center facing the 90cm width range and electric oven with a stainless steel range hood.
3.  The left side wall will be an area for full height kitchen cabinets to keep plate ware and regularly used tools and utensils.
4.  Provide a microwave and rice cooker station along the plate ware cabinet away from the main cooking area .
5.  Leave the bottom of the counter open with metal shelves to store pots & pans for easy access when cooking
6.  Provide windows facing the outdoor dining in order to see the guests waiting for their order

Auxiliary Areas
1.  Create a private Family Dining for the owners and staff next to the kitchen for privacy
2. Create a Separate Hot Beverage & Breakfast Station closer to the Guests Dining Area in the Family Dining Area.  This would include coffee makers, kettles and toasters so those who need them need not enter the kitchen.
3.  Cold beverage will be stored separately in a fridge at the guests dining area
4.  Provide an outdoor kitchen counter equipped with a pizza oven, stove and grilling station.
5.  Provide more cabinets to keep canned goods and other pantry items at the Family Dining

I had fun working with the owners from planning, concept making, design, and management of the project for this kitchen.

  1. That;s a massive change indeed, so much cleaner, practical and lighter. My kitchen would probably have to be extremely clean, something that can be easily wiped from floor to ceiling, but it would have to have some special details that make it different and that make it Dezzy :) Simple but not boring, luxurious but not kitschy.

    1. I am sure it will be fun to design your kitchen Dezzy. A Wine Chiller
and a barista type coffee machine will be non-negotiable elements in my dream kitchen :D

    2. I imagine mine would have round windows or something like that and seats in them to make it cozy. And a separate tea cupboard for all my supplies, and possibly a secret cellar or niche in it :) I've recently watched a clip on Facebook on kitchens with hidden wine coolers and cellars, often hidden under the kitchen island or even under the floor. If I had a chamber in my house large enough I'd definitely built a secret room in it behind bookshelves.
